== STORY INFO & SPECIAL MECHANICS ==
As the final horns bellow and the sounds of combat die down from the previous month's battle, the Ulven forces and their allies find themselves on blood soaked snow and frozen ground. After struggling to keep routes open for warriors and supply carts to freely move, the mordok forces opposing the Ulven army seemed to dominate the perimeters. Warriors and adventurers alike fought and died in the swamp trying to oppose them and it appeared the mordok would solidify their hold of the area.
In a desperate move to try to turn the tide of battle, the Clan Steinjottun warpack and their allied forces chose to draw out as many mordok as possible to their section of the camp's perimeter defenses. This bold gamble paid off as wave upon wave of frenzied mordok, led again by this new mordok figure, broke upon the defenses of the outpost. Failure would result in their entire camp being massacred which steeled the resolve and pushed the defenders to fight and endure whatever the mordok could throw at them. The battle was over and the mordok were driven back after suffering staggering casualties.
With this victory came reports that the Ulven army was able to decisively defeat mordok forces on a number of other fronts of the battle. Instead of finding themselves on losing footing and unsure of the fate of the Ulven army in the swamp, the Ulven forces and their allies find themselves back on even ground against the mordok. Controlled but heated arguments have broken out among several Ulven leaders in the camp. One side is pushing for the Ulven to take advantage of this victory and push hard against mordok forces which, if successful, could crush the largest mordok threat ever known and put an end to the war for now. This would also allow the Ulven army the chance to properly put to rest countless Ulven dead that have yet to be recovered. The other side is pushing for using this breathing room to coordinate supplies and wounded and get back to the Shield of Mardrun before the Ulven army finds itself cut off and overrun. This would give ground to the mordok but it would allow the remaining Ulven forces to survive to fight another day.
Both sides have merit and they have enough followers to make it a stalemate. In an effort to recognize the bravery and honor gained by fighting alongside the Ulven in the Dirge Swamp, the leaders have allowed the adventurers and allies stationed at the camp to cast the tie-breaking decision on whether to push or regroup. The fate of the end of of the Dirge Swamp War lies with the allied forces stationed inside the Ulven army's camp.
To make matters even more complicated, the fighting and the movement of the two armies has brought them dangerously close to the settlement of Serai. Former home to Bos Mezar, these May'Kar Dominion settlers had created their settlement far to the north and find themselves on the wrong side of the Shield of Mardrun. After receiving word that the mordok army is much larger than previously anticipated and at the urging of several colonial and faction leaders, the Mayor of Serai has ordered the settlement to be evacuated. Without help it could mean that the settlement is overrun and the seventy or so settlers killed by the mordok forces. However, this will take time and allied forces will need to make the choice to pledge critical resources to helping them or not. The Mayor has sent a messenger to the Ulven forces asking for help, even offering a reward of coin or pledging scholarly research should those documents survive the evacuation.
In this final event of the Dirge Swamp War chapter, players will decide whether to take the fight to the mordok or to consolidate their forces and retreat back to the Shield of Mardrun. Players will also need to decide to either leave the people of Serai to their fate against an onslaught of mordok or to divert critical forces and time to helping them evacuate to safety.
***UPDATED: As a bitter cold moves into Mardrun, the build up to the final battle is suddenly stalled as the Mordok hide from the cold and the Ulven army attempt to regroup and plan their next move. The decision is made by the Ulven leaders to move to the nearby settlement of Serai and occupy it, utilizing the existing homes and buildings to attempt to gain shelter from the frigid conditions. The local town hall of Serai has been occupied and turned into a command center for the Ulven army with areas for training, triage stations for wounded and equipment repairs, and a war room setup to determine how forces nearby will be deployed.
Event Story Summary...
- The Ulven army in the Dirge Swamp suffered a heavy defeat in November
- The Ulven army was able to rally together and defeat the mordok forces in December
- Both the Ulven and Mordok forces find their armies are relatively evenly matched again
- A choice needs to be made; push and defeat the mordok at a risk of being defeated or regroup and return back to the Shield of Mardrun
- The outcome of this event will end the first Dirge Swamp War, for better or worse
- The fighting takes place next to Serai, the settlement of the former Bos Mezar faction
- The people of Serai are looking to help evacuate their people and their belongings
- Successfully evacuating Serai will not help the war effort but will result in coin rewards and potential pledging of magic resources
= EVENT SPECIAL MECHANICS =
1) Dirge Swamp War Direction
Based on the outcome of the last two events, the current story-line with the Dirge Swamp War is that things are fairly even between the mordok and Ulven armies. The Ulven forces and their allies were able to secure a victory last month, bringing them back into a position to be able to take the fight to the mordok again. It will be up to the players in attendance to the upcoming event to choose which initiative in the war to focus on at the January event.
- Focusing on Pushing against the mordok will require the players to conduct more combat missions in order to face the mordok in evenly matched combat. This will represent the players moving out to go where they are needed to meet the mordok head on. Successfully completing these missions will mean that the Ulven army continues on to score another victory against the mordok. More combat missions (see below) will need to be completed to be successful, featuring more (and more challenging) combat.
- Focusing on Regrouping at the Shield of Mardrun will take advantage of the equal footing to coordinate a retreat back to the Shield. This will also represent the players moving out to go where they are needed to meet the mordok head on, but in doing so it will make the routes back to the Shield more secure. Successfully completing these missions will mean the ulven army will not push to fight the mordok decisively again but instead they will fall back. Less combat missions (see below) will need to be completed to be successful, featuring less (and less challenging) combat.
- Failing to complete one of these two mission options will mean that the Ulven army does not have a cohesive focus in this final conflict, which could spell disaster for the forces stationed in the swamp.
***UPDATED: These missions will still be valid even with us moving inside. Players will have to plan and decide how they will commit forces to go out and take on missions to help the war effort. This will be done by pulling players out of the In-Game area and to an Out-Of-Game staging area where PCs and NPCs will coordinate how to conduct these missions and dice rolls will be used to determine the outcomes. Even though this event is indoors and non-combat, the equipment you bring, the armor you wear, and the skills you have will have a significant impact on how your characters do during these optional missions.
2) Combat, Mission Oriented Themed Event
To simulate the fact that the combined forces of the ulven and some of their colonial allies currently in a fight in the swamp and are on the move, we will not be using the outpost for the main camp for this event. A small wayside camp will be created on the trail that will be used for the "forward camp" of the military forces in the area. The goal will be to take the fight to the mordok and complete combat based objectives; if enough are completed, then the players will be victorious and the campaign in the dirge swamp will continue forward. The exact nature of these mission objectives will be given to the military camp personnel at the event but you can be certain that it will be driving mordok from areas or decisively defeating them in combat.
Similar to November's event, the players will need to coordinate combat groups of a maximum size based on the density of mordok threats in the area and meet them a certain number of times in combat, focusing on more "evenly matched" combat encounters.
3) Serai Evacuation
A secondary objective at the event will be interacting with the outpost which is the outskirts of the settlement of Serai. The settlers of Serai are looking to evacuate their homes due to the mordok army being much larger than predicted. It is up to the players to help them evacuate by getting people (and/or supplies) moved a set number of times from the outpost to the Ulven army's forward camp. Players have the option of helping them, or not, as their fate is not tied to the outcome of the Dirge Swamp War. Assisting them can be done in one of two ways; escorting the people so that they can make it safely south or waiting to escort the people and their belongings which will take longer and be more difficult. The reward for the second option could be coin and gifts or a pledge to help with magical research, utilizing some of the scholars and texts of the Serai researchers.
***UPDATED: This side mission objective is still valid and players will need to make the choice whether to redirect resources and player efforts to helping the Serai people or the war effort as a whole.
== EVENT INFO ==
= UPDATED: JANUARY EVENT IS BEING MOVED INDOORS DUE TO DANGEROUSLY COLD CONDITIONS
With Winter Cold advisories and frigid air hitting most of Wisconsin, the temperatures this weekend are too cold to safely participate in outside.
The event is being moved to the NorthShore Restaurant and we have rented the large banquet hall for our group.
The style of event will remain the same; players will be able to participate and pledge support to different areas of the war. Instead of going out and conducting the missions and fighting mordok, players will be pulled to an out-of-game area to determine the outcome. Although we are indoors, there is a lot hanging on this moment and the outcome of the Dirge Swamp war is fast approaching.
=SPLIT EVENT FORMAT =
This event will feature 4 hours of In-Game role play and then 3 (or so) hours of Out-Of-Game Workshop. This will give players a chance to role play, interact with the game, and then there is ample time to do Player Contracts, Combat Tutorials, or work one on one with staff on story/character questions.
= INDOOR NON-COMBAT EVENT =
This is also detailed in the Restuarant location info, but copied here as well.
There is NO competitive fighting allowed at this event due to us being indoors. Any fighting must be coordinated with Staff ahead of time and heavily controlled. Players sparring during combat tutorials or training is acceptable.
= PRE-REG FOOD & DRINKING WATER =
Pre-registered members will be provided a small meal on Sunday. Only pre-registered members (PCs & NPCs) will be added to the list for food as this helps us plan ahead of time.
*** You should plan on bringing some extra food and snacks to tide you over for the rest of the event. ***
We will NOT be providing feastware for the meals (which will be in-game); please make sure you bring feastware!
Water is available at this venue.
** Plan ahead, be self sufficient, and bring your own food/water! ***
***UPDATE: Since we are connected to a Restaurant, players are welcome to leave the In-Game area and order food at the bar. We will still be providing a small meal to Pre-Reg players at the event, but there are readily available food options now.
= CAMPING, BATHROOMS, FIRES, WATER, & ELECTRICITY =

- There is NO competitive fighting allowed at this event due to us being indoors. Any fighting must be coordinated with Staff ahead of time and heavily controlled. Players sparring during combat tutorials or training is acceptable.

= NIGHT CONDITIONS =
This event will not take place during night conditions.
= WEATHER CONDITIONS =
***UPDATED: Due to the frigid and dangerous outdoor temps, we are moving the event indoors.
= EXPANDED NPC ROLE SIGN-UP =
There are NPC roles available during this event. If you are interested in playing an NPC role, please contact us ahead of time to let us know... see below for options.
- The "Expanded NPC Role Sign-Up Deadline" is the same cut-off as the membership Early Bird deadline (by Thursday, 1/17/19) and this will add you to the list to get a more detailed or involved NPC. This gives us time to flesh out a backstory, details, and how your NPC can impact the scenario. The staff will then email you back your detailed NPC role before the event, usually a bit after the pre-reg deadline ends.
= EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT =
- The "Early Bird Discount Deadline" is the week before the event (by Thursday, 1/17/19) and this will place you on the list to get the pre-reg meal and automatically add you to the "Faster Check-In" line, allowing you to register much quicker at the event.
= PC SKILL UPDATES =
- If you have updates to your PC, DO THEM AHEAD OF TIME AND EMAIL US THE CHANGES!!!
The deadline for these changes is the Tuesday before the event (1/22/19). You cannot do skill updates at the event and also be in the "Faster Check-In" as we prepare your card/bag/wristband/etc early in preparation of your arrival and day-of PCs can wait until after registration is complete for the majority of the player.
IF WE HAVE TIME, then we can update your PC skills. There is no guarantee we can do this at an event due to the registration time needs.
= LATE PLAYERS =
We are following a strict time-block for check-in/registration so players will be expected to arrive on time to get registered and then attend the game briefing. This helps us make sure we stay on time and keep the game starting when we need it to. If a player is going to be late and they are going to arrive after registration closes, they are expected to notify the staff by emailing the lasthopelarp@gmail.com address to let us know. This allows us to pull the PC cards and info and prepare their items for when they arrive. Failure to do this will result in an exp penalty if a player arrives after reg closes but before the briefing, or a forced NPC role if the player arrives after the briefing. This does not mean we do not have wiggle room; all you have to do is notify us ahead of time via email so we can prepare accordingly.
= RESOURCE & LORE SKILL USAGE =
Players may have a PC(s) use a Resource skill to make an impact on an event but only if they are planning on attending the upcoming event.
Resource Usage for this event needs to be submitted VIA EMAIL no later than midnight on 1/5/19. Information gained from this Resource usage will be available at Check-In at the event; IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO ASK FOR THAT INFO! Players should please try to make sure they are going to be in attendance before sending in their Resource usage.
This is also a reminder to ask about Lore cards at check-in! Frequently, there are Lore cards available for you to read that represent your characters ability to know about things going on in the area. Some of this information can be really useful to know!
= MANDATORY CHECK-OUT =
All players are required to properly check-out at every event. Make sure you plan on doing this by seeking out a Herald to turn in your PC card and relevant game props along with you and your equipment's condition.
We will be doing a Check-Out after each day so that players can turn in their items.
If you checkout as a PC, you may not "check back in" after a period of time. Once you check out as a PC, your PC is done for the event day.
There may be limitations on how and where PCs can check out at an event; ask instead of assuming if you feel like your PC would leave early, and then staff can assign you a role after that.
